Surrealism is a way of juxtaposing
Challenging reality, attractive to what's so called imaginative potential of dreams. Surrealists sought to reject rationalism & that of a formal convention in post WW1 Paris. Surrealism at that time was not into Graphic Design as it is today because of it's beauty of art and that of Salvador Dali the master of Surrealism. This movement is a big influence to Graphic Design, in fact it is used in everyday life. Typography that is manipulated or distorted counts as Surrealist, magazines / editorials that have photo manipulations are subjected as Surrealistic.
Surrealistic Collages
Maria Kassab created a Photomontage made out of cut outs and text, but edited onto a software. The surrealistic collage is showing a powerful subject in the front with a head that is juxtaposed the same way as Max Ernst's ideological techniques. Using a background full of confused lines, shapes and text this is to show smoke or some kind of obstruction in the city. She uses headlines underneath, a typeface that is Arabic. The most eye catching object in this photomontage is obviously the Pink highlighted object that is placed instead of the person's head, forming some kind of a heart or a mechanical structure. | Aditi describes his poster design as a Surrealistic field of working technique. In fact it is Juxtaposed & materials that are transformed into a photomontage. The typography listed as - 'KATASTROFA' is symbolised as crunched, broke, manipulated in a way of destruction but it is recognisable. The eye is the spot of everything, it is eye catching and it represents the eye magazine. Surrounded by it's body; some kind of creature in fact teeth are seen under the eye. Pink type is written onto the newspaper or some sort of paper like material, the contrast being shown is clearly outstanding. |
Surrealistic Photo Manipulations
Juxtaposed human body parts hanging and popping out, giving the viewer an illusion as if it's real. Surrealist design, showing the importance of love - a man's hand, a woman's leg, an eye & a woman's breast, these all relate to the exhibition. A pink background shows : relaxation, love, calm, sex & the type is the contrary of the light colour, it's boldness is struck out for a better communication. The types on the left top corner : S,L,I,O most probably represent the formation of the human parts, they might be constructed wisely to show some kind of a hidden message. |
