Pictograms on what I learned is all about a visual language that is understood by all. Language that is a 1'narrative visual material, avoiding details which do not improve the narrative character'. These Pictograms are generally formed in a silhouette format, it goes in a wide range of Visual Communication for example : Men & Women, Dogs & Cats, Vehicles, Air Vehicles and many that can translate words into Pictures (Pictograms) .
These symbolic characters or objects can automaticaly translate a story, a story that for example can be related towards a story of some kind, or an illustration that has to have Pictograms ... a poster maybe, or using a Propaganda poster & instead of using words using these challenging Pictograms for a challenging communication.

Munich Olympics Pictograms (1972) designed by Otl Aicher
Pictograms can be an effective way of communicating with society & therefore this designer introduced Pictograms as part of the Olympics to show the sport being held in this event . For example he designed diverse Pictograms such as : Football Player & a ball, Cycling, Boxing, Canoeing, Basketball any so many others.

are spoken in Europe alone.
For this reason it was necessary
to use intelligible pictorial symbols"
