Simplicity of a form
De Stijl is named for it's famous minimalistic forms and lines with bold edges. Stating this information, De Stijl is known for it's artistic elements, that clearly show a composition of just 3 primary colours - Red, Blue & Yellow supported by Horizontals & Verticals that produce a disciplined object picture composition emphasising on their non-figurative formal qualities. Piet Mondrian's philosophy was that the term Abstraction was not just a movement, but a way of life. De Stijl apart from having the painting on canvas element, it did share something expressive towards modern artistic movements, such as that of Graphic Design & Architecture and also moved towards furniture (product design) and left a big impact on objects that till today they are still in fashion. Mondrian's influence did not just stop there but extended far more beyond the painting element to the the world of Fashion Design. Yves Saint Laurent did inspire himself from 'Mondrian's Dress' which has become an original classic.
Impact on Graphic Design
Graphic Design artists were influenced and still are about the minimalistic geometrical composition of De Stijl. De Stijl is known for it's pure primary colours and bold lines, therefore it would be a representation of most significant works that relate to Graphic Design. Below is a design that formulates the idea of De Stijl, and influences of Dada & Constructivism. The use of colour, Red is represented in a way of attention, thus the black text is composed accordingly to it's purest alignments.
Theo Van Doesburg De Stijl Magazine design, is known for it's purest form with aligned element. Graphic Design at that time was already in form, formation of text, designing of typeface & that of designing the structure that formulates geometrical shapes (Cubes and Rectangles) stating the element of Architecture.
